Nature Re-emerged
I am delighted to announce that my third solo exhibition, Nature Re-emerged, opened on December 11, 2024, at the Weave Artisan Society in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and has received great interest. Ten of my artworks are on display, and they look wonderful in the Weave Gallery.
The true reason I moved to Thailand is for the colors. The greens, yellows, and blues here stand in stark contrast to the browns, blacks, and greys that dominate the Netherlands, where I grew up, for at least 10 months of the year.
But during the dry winter season, the burning of the fields and forest begins. The air fills with increasingly dangerous dust particles, and by mid-March, Chiang Mai and the surrounding provinces are covered in a dense, dangerous layer of smog.
The vibrant colors fade. The blue sky disappears. The mountains vanish into the haze. Nature seems to withdraw.
After two long months, the first rains finally arrive and it feels like witnessing a miracle. Suddenly, nature began to reawaken. The blue sky returned over the reservoir near my house. The green of the trees and plants, the yellow flowers, and the vivid sunsets and sunrises emerged again, no longer dulled by smog. The fresh raindrops seemed to revive everything, highlighting the shapes, textures, and contours of the landscape, making the flowers sparkle once more. Nature re-merged
These photo images are a celebration of the vibrant beauty that draws me to Thailand, a reminder of why this place has become my home. But unfortunately, it is also a stark reminder of what is taken from us during the smog season in Chiang Mai, and what a profound loss that is.
